Review of Mr. Brooks (2007) by Avtar R — 06 Aug 2010
A surprisingly solid thriller. It's a pulp film, but it's well aware of its pulpy-ness, and that's what helps make it work. It knows what it is and plays the serial-killer style quite well, doing mostly what you expect but doing it skillfully. While I always count on William Hurt for great performance, I was also pleasantly surprised with Costner's work here. It's not perfect, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. Recommended.
A side note: For trying so hard to convince us it's set in Portland, OR, (as it is mentioned repeatedly) it's quite obvious to anyone who's ever been there that this movie was NOT filmed in Portland. Shreveport, LA does not make a good substitute. I'm just sayin'.
