Review of Mr. Brooks (2007) by Michael V — 06 Feb 2012
Kevin Costner and Demi Moore in a movie together. Could they give me any other reason to completely stay away from this? Yep, Dane Cook. This movie should appear highly on my stay away list because of the casting combo here.
But somehow I pushed that aside and watched it anyways. Extremely glad I did. Actually I'd go so far as to say I actually liked Costner in this. In fact I'd say it is his best performance. He is cold, brilliant, methodical, and heartless.
Definitely not the traits we normally expect from Kevin Costner. And yet, it's fascinating to watch. I found myself rooting for him. Kudos as well to William Hurt, who isn't known for playing this sort of role either.
His character could easily descend into clichà (C), but it doesn't. He holds the right note, and the chemistry between him and Costner is tangible. The script is original and smart, with a few dark comic moments added at the right moments.
As entertainment, it unquestionably delivers, and it is a good thriller which breaks the Hollywood mold. It has been talked about becoming a trilogy which I hope is still the case because I really want to see what happens next.
