It's nice to see Kevin Costner doing bad things intentionally.

Seeing as how he really hasn't been in a good movie since the days of Field of Dreams or Robin Hood, it's nice to see that he's back in the habit of making at least tolerable films.

The man of the year, the modle citizen, perfect father, and serial killer all rolled into one, Mr. Brooks is a very smart, very dangerous man.

The biggest problem with the film is that this feels like a quality sequel to a prequel that's yet to be made. Brooks has a lot of back story but you never see any of it, instead you only hear about it in stiff dialogue and boring conversations. Leaving room for, as I said, a prequel. With an ending open for at least two more sequels, you constantly feel as though you're only in on one small part of a big big story. That wouldn't be bad if the SMALL part wasn't TWO HOURS long.

All complaints aside, it's slightly better than average, the thrilling moments are thrilling, and William Hurt definitely steals the show and saves it at the same time, face it, he's a bad ass.

Costner does okay, but as I commented on dialogue before, his acting at times feels a little stiff, blame the acting, blame the writing, either way it's nothing amazing.

Moore is okay, though just as stiff, and mildly uninteresting despite the fact that her character has three stories going at the same time.

Cook is Cook. I don't want to encourage his acting, but he's actually not too bad here. Well better than his stand-up alter ego or his goofy rolls in movies like Good Luck Chuck or Employee of the Month.

William Hurt is the man. He's just flippin' cool. He makes a good villain, and he's genuinely fun to watch in this roll... Not fun like, look at that guy fun... Fun like, riding to the top of the roller coaster very slowly fun. You know when you get to the top something bad is going to happen.

All in all, it's a worthy rental, and possible purchase should you find it in the bargain bin at your local movie store.
