Honestly, it's darker then shit, although some of the underlying storylines bring down the overall effectiveness, this is one of those movies that shows Kevin Costner can not only act, but he can act with a darkness that some other mainstream actors can't convincingly carry.
And William Hurt is just devilish as Costners dark voice. This is a very good movie.
