Review of Mr. Baseball (1992) by Private U — 30 Jan 2008
Picture this: Tom Selleck, playing the Ultimate American Douchebag, is a washed-up, tempermental MLB player who gets signed to play baseball in Japan. His ego gets him into plenty of trouble with his manager, the manager's daughter (woo woo) and pretty much all of Japan.
Hilarity ensues, and he eventually turns into a sappy, go-get-em team player. Comic genius? Cinematic brilliance? Moustache magnificence?! How about all of the above! This movie is so effing campy it will make your stomach lurch, but you'll enjoy every moment of it.
The disgustingly catchy theme music, complete with synthesized ballpark organ, made me want to scarf Cracker Jacks and spit. Oh, and P.S.: Realistic or otherwise, this movie makes baseball in Japan look a million times cooler than American baseball.
Like, they have ninjas and shotguns and stuff. Seriously. See this movie, if not for the riveting plot *cough*, for Selleck's sexy 'stache. So hot right now.
