Review of Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) by Benjamin V — 22 Dec 2018
Despite the negativity attracted due to being pulled from its cinematic release and the questionable CGI at the beginning of the film, as the film continues it progressively gets better in visuals and narrative.
The acting is great (Notably Andy Serkis as Baloo), visuals for the animals just as good as the 2016 film, and the story is compelling and distinct in its own right by focusing more on humans to explore Mowgliï¿ 1/2(TM)s character, with a darker tone which makes sense and is not just to be ï¿ 1/2edgyï¿ 1/2?.
HOWEVER, the filmï¿ 1/2(TM)s primary problem derives from its timing. Due to the recent release of the 2016 Jungle Book, audiences will constantly be comparing the films in their heads and everything ï¿ 1/2Mowgliï¿ 1/2? does great the 2016 does great also, likely being lost and forgotten by those who have an attachment to Disneyï¿ 1/2(TM)s telling of the narrative.
Also the darker tone may feel jarring due to the MUCH lighter tone of the Disney film. However, if you put ALL this aside, "Mowgli" is JUST AS GOOD as the 2016 film, and is truly a surprise as someone going in with low expectations.
If you have Netflix there is no excuse.
