Review of Moving (1988) by Everett M — 22 Mar 2008
You know who steals the show? Not Randy Quaid, with his Eddie-from-"Vacation"-on-downers. Not Dave Thomas, with his "I'm no longer a hoser doing bad jokes about Canadian bacon! Damn it, I couldn't resist!" Not even Richard Pryor with his "Chris Rock done stole every last punchline from me, damn it!".
It's freaking Dana Carvey.
Years before he would dislocate his jaw in "Wayne's World" and spent the 90s coping with medical problems, planning his critically acclaimed 00s comeback "The Master of Disguise" (which, I'm sure you're all aware, won Best Wash-Out Comeback of the Year award), Dana Carvey squeezes in a role as 8 different personalities trapped in one body in this flick.
It's worth more than just that gag, though I must say that gag was worth the inclusion. People are saying this film is a relic of the 80s. Bullcrap. This film has some timeless stuff in it, from middle-class suburban observations to middle-class suburban observations. And it makes fun of those mover services, the topic of which one would hope would be covered at some point in this proceedings. My point being, what's so dated about it, the hair? Big offense, folks.
I love how Richard Pryor goes apecrap at the end (Kung-Fu-meets-Rambo??) And, yes, I will admit, Eddie-from-"Vacation"-on-downers comes pretty close to stealing the show.
