Review of Movie 43 (2013) by Mason B — 06 Aug 2014
So, the infamous Movie 43 has come and gone, won worst picture at the Razzies, and generally humiliated all who were involved with it. So the question for many readers may be, "Is it really that bad?" Well, after seeing it I can only answer yes, sort of.
While Movie 43 is a terrible film that is unfunny, filled with occasionally offensive and embarrassing humor, the honest truth is that despite expectations, there are far worse films out there. I think if I ever made a worst films ever list this wouldn't even be on it.
Don't mistake my meaning though, the film is still terrible. Movie 43 is a collection of sketches staring a-list stars that are meant to be gross, offensive, and gerenally low-brow. While they achieve the low-brow part, they fail to make it in any way funny.
I'll admit I smirked or chuckled a few times, but the majority of the film is either boring or just plain irritating. I really believe that many of the stars are putting honest effort into their sketches, trying to make them funny, but it's still evident that they are embarrassed to be there.
The best sketch in the film is Emma Stones, because it's short and actually approaches something like comedy. The worst would either have to be the iBabe or Halle Berry's and Stephen Merchent's truth or dare sketch.
The ibabe one was a little bit sexist and the Truth or dare was just embarrassing. Still, the movie was blessedly short and I couldn't quite call it boring. Ultimately, I walked into Movie 43 with very low expectation and it met every one of them, but after it ended I truly thought that it could have been a lot more painful.
