Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Jed G — 07 Sep 2013
In the words of my great friend J.W. on his Black Swan review, "There's always that one film where you are left speechless, you don't utter a single word throughout because you are so gripped.
" That is Moulin Rouge for me. Baz Luhrmann's visual masterpiece is a breathtaking and exhilarating experience that puts all his best talents to use. Unlike Romeo+Juliet, which was smothered with terrible unevenness and ridiculous plotting, Moulin Rouge takes a familiar subject matter and transforms it into something unbelievably wonderful and grand that entertains just as much as it intrigues.
The opening scenes, in particular, captivated me the most, with an utterly spectacular dance sequence that featured an unbelievably inventive style of mixing modern music into an old era and changing the words to fit into one fantastic musical number.
This movie is the absolute definition of the word passion. The entire movie is made with such a passionate and beautiful art style that will most likely never be able to truly be done in such a manner ever again.
It is a truly epic spectacle, and one of my favorite films of all time.
