Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Scott E — 27 Mar 2012
Artistically a triumph, visually arresting, entertaining. A bit melodramatic, the story never really rings true. It barely goes anywhere. But somehow it manages to still keep your attention. The contrast in colors and characters keeps the eye occupied.
The love story between Satine and Christian seems phony, we never really know where or how this love develops. She never really does anything to win his heart, although his dotage upon her seems to seep into Nicole Kidman's performance, which was excellent.
With plot emptiness, the film inserts songs that are recognizable, that barely do anything to push the plot. (Although I did enjoy Ewan McGregor singing Elton John's "Your Song", it fit nicely and was quite impressive.
) Never before did such a weak plot still manage to triumph and be so good.
