Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Amber N — 06 Apr 2012
What I admire most about Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!" is the contrast between how calculated everything your seeing is, but also how organic it feels. Luhrmann's vision is so specific and dazzling that you inhabit this world along with the characters.
Nicole Kidman and Ewen McGregor help balance real emotion with such an artificial aesthetic and in that coupling the film bursts to life. "Moulin Rouge!", while it doesn't always work, is till one of the true originals to come out of the 00s.
