Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Roxette A — 16 May 2012
With marvelous songs, entertaining dance numbers and a cast of wildly colourful personas, Moulin Rouge! glimmers with an inexplicable charm that boggles and assaults the senses at first and then captures them with a vivid passion.
The film takes the concept of "star-crossed lovers" into a whole new level without overstepping the boundaries of respectable entertainment. Romantic without getting schmaltzy, tragic without being pessimistic, the romance explored in the dynamic of Montmarte's underworld during the turn of the century is imaginative and fresh, comical yet suffused with splendid parallels.
