Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Anna L — 01 Jul 2013
Energetic, lavish, dazzling, romantic, and sexy are all words to describe "Moulin Rouge!," which in my mind is Baz Luhrmann's masterpiece. It terrifically mixes styles of the modern musical with such classics as "Singin' in the Rain" and "An American in Paris".
You can't take your eyes off of it, and best of all, you have actors who can actually sing. Nicole Kidman and Ewan MecGregor both have very nice voices, and they give tremendous sympathy to their doomed characters.
Jim Broadbent and John Leguizamo stand out in the ensemble. I can watch this one as many times as I want and never get tired of it.
