Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Michael Z — 01 Mar 2014
Moulin Rouge has - with it's childish conclusions on romance and love - a distressingly unpleasant screenplay riddled with the protagonist's (and the villain's) incessant whining and moaning. However, as a stylistic experiment, Luhrmann creates a bold, audience-polarizing aesthetic that the critical mind can't help but admire. And some of the musical numbers are admirably dramatic. Others, however, not so.
*2.5/4*.
