Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Richard B — 28 Jun 2015
Splendidly intoxicating. So much glamour and glitter spun into a beautifully tragic romance. Revelling in sequins and absinthe and greed and lust the debauchery is stripped away and the vulnerable humanity of Ewan McGregors naively passionate poet and Nicole Kidman's imprisoned prostitute is exposed.
I bet Baz Luhrmann throws a great party, because he manages to leave the viewer with that slightly hazy feeling where you're not quite sure if what you just saw was dream or reality.
A story told in such a unique and scintillating way that the musical numbers come as no surprise and just add to it's strange magnetism. If you like your films to be logical and sensible then I suggest you turn and run, but if you're a secret Romantic and, like McGregor's Christian, believe in Truth, Beauty, Freedom and, above all things, Love then sit down and buckle yourself in for an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you humming The Beatles, Kiss and U2 all in one song.
