Review of Mouchette (1967) by Adam T — 14 May 2008
Let's not beat around the bush; yay for Robert Bresson! We get that characteristic penetrating humanism which coaxes the truth forth in an almost reticent way. "Mouchette" (which, anyway, I'm pretty sure means little fly in French; as in the insect, since "la mouche" means "the fly") knows only contempt, but it's not enough, and her more tender/etc.
side is left incapable of realising itself properly. Apparently this was one of Andrei Tarkovsky's favourite films (so says Wikipedia), I can see definite similarities between it and Ivan's Childhood - so if you watch this and liked it you might like Ivan's Childhood (aka Ivanovo Detsvo) too, or on the other hand if you've seen Ivan's Childhood and you liked it, check this one out some time.
