Review of Motorpsycho! (1965) by John A — 02 Nov 2007
Russ Meyer was an industry unto himself. His obsession with womens breasts made his films a commercial commodity. But seeing as he financed and produced everything himself, there were no high stake producers or studios to share profits with.
He owned and earned from every film he made (aside from a couple extreme examples that sucked due to studio interference anyways) Instead of being low-brow T&A trash films, he would instill his work with real craftsmanship.
There is a very wide body of work that spans over 20 years that most of the public hasn't even discovered yet. From films like this one and Faster Pussycat, Kill,Kill to Up and Beneath the Valley of Ultra-Vixens, no film-maker before or since has presented this subect matter with this much respect, quality, care, and professionalism.
Motor-psycho is a tale of a man and woman who have lost their lovers to a biker gang, that team up for revenge. Again, everything about his process elevates a style of film that should be barrel-bottom trash to legitimate greatness.
But don't get me wrong - He still delivers the sex and violence, unencumbered by a ratings board that a self distributor like him has no concern for. He is dead now, but we will be discovering his work for years to come.
