Review of Mother's Day (1980) by Dave B — 21 Jun 2009
This was a fun surprise...i'd forgotten I owned this movie until I came across it while moving last week. I watched it the other night and found i'd also forgotten a good 90% of the movie. At first glance Mother's Day seems typical of early 80s slashers, (complete with Holiday-themed title!) and while it does borrow liberally from movies like Friday the 13th and I Spit on Your Grave, what sets this one apart is the twisted sense of humor and unexpected pop culture satire.
The bratty, talkative killers/siblings seem to have inspired the Firefly clan in House of 1,000 Corpses, and I guarantee Mother's Day will perhaps be the only movie you'll ever see that features an elderly women suffocated with a giant inflatable novelty breasts.
