Review of Mother and Child (2009) by Muntasim T — 12 Aug 2011
An astonishingly well scripted and acted drama from the writer director Rodrigo Garcia- the offspring of the most famous Garcia, the Nobel prize winning Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Even from pedigree aside, this is a cinematic marvel, not a single misstep, and plenty of pitfalls for melodrama deftly side stepped to offer a superior drama that proves that a movie can have lasting emotional impact, without resorting to cheap melodrama.
Naomi Watts and Annette Bening provides Oscar worthy performances, depicting fully fleshed out characters, miles away from the stereotypes we are accustomed to watching in Hollywood films. This is a gem of a film, and itâ??s a great pity that worthless films like Sucker Punch and Eat, Pray, Love will enjoy manifold viewership due to the marketing machinery, while this will remain a rarely viewed treasure.
