Review of mother! (2017) by Jenna I — 03 Oct 2017
Not typically an Aronofsky fan but this was fun.... but that's about it. It's fun, it's bluntly obvious, it's nutty, it's grating, it will make you want to sit down somewhere with some quiet at the end but more so because your ears are kinda ringing from the sound of incoherent voices, broken glass and explosions.
(Plot spoilers to follow...).
Id call this Aronofsky's remake of Possession in a way, it deals with similar themes in similar ways. A lot of tight portrait shots with a camera that dances around its subject as they move, creating a disorienting and claustrophobic feel. Pretty crazy surround sound design - things are moving all around you in the theater and it definitely helps build the intensity where you might otherwise laugh or roll your eyes. But where as Possession is divorce porn, mother! is more like sensitive artist boy who uses his pain to Make The Art porn...
(Spoilers spoilers to follow).
The symbolism here is bluntly obvious, the woman builds the home and gives and gives to the man but never stops to ask why his home burned down to begin with. What made me laugh more is knowing that Jennifer Lawrence read this script and was like "yeah I wanna date this guy." Like I'll bet a dollar this movie becomes the story of their breakup soon enough...might be my meh-ness towards Aronofsky but it sure as hell feels like a page out of his self important diary. "It's just me babe! I just gotta keep making art!" And of course her dying wish, after knowing the truth, is to give further.... zzzzz.
