Review of mother! (2017) by Levi T — 20 Oct 2017
Mother! is a two-hour anxiety attack following the heels of Jennifer Lawrence trudging through a fun-house of nightmares that is pretty bizarre, entertaining and jarring. This is not a movie for your average movie-goer- or maybe it is as long as they know that they are subjecting themselves to Aronofsky's free for all, paint splattered, torn up canvas.
If every film was like this one, things would be bad, but it's important to squirm in the seat and wince once and a while. What gives this film 4 stars is its uniqueness to film as a medium and Aronofsky's ability to fling paint across the room and make it splatter precisely how he wants it.
The theme is injected with Aronofsky's own blood, anchoring the heavily personal relationship of creator and creation which caused some serious reflection, at least for me. It wasn't until after the film I was aware of the intended 'allegory' which actually lessened the films power for me, so I won't spoil it here.
..otherwise, Bardem, Pfeiffer, Harris turn in kick-ass, terrifying performances like true pro's. Don't be afraid to laugh out loud if you feel the urge.
