Review of mother! (2017) by Brandon O — 04 Jan 2018
Mother! is easily one of the most ambitious major studio releases in years (maybe since Aronofsky's previous work, Noah?).
Whether it's alluding to fame, motherhood, creativity, marriage, or its principal concept -- which I'll try not to spoil here -- this is a religious horror/psychological thriller/family drama that (quite obviously) has a lot on its mind.
It sounds like it'd be a formal mess, and it is at certain points, but the ending and overall experience dramatically outweigh that fact. From the camerawork, editing, and sound design to what takes place on screen, this is an unrelenting cyclone of anxiety and tension. However, after putting the pieces together and looking back, this film is sharply effective on artistic and personal levels. Aronofsky has melded timeless wisdom with contemporary concerns, and amidst all the chaos, there is somehow just enough profound hope to latch onto.
