Review of mother! (2017) by Brendan N — 16 Jan 2018
Darren Aronofsky is a talented director and I have followed all his movies since Pi, but like Noah this really was tough to watch. Lawrence is forever asking what are you doing here and can you leave, it just gets slightly overbearing for 2 hours.
The concept is interesting and I think if the film wasn't promoted as a mainstream horror film, it would have worked well. The studio pushed this film as one of the scariest films of all time but when you actually watch the film you can see it was marketed incorrectly, anyone who caught it after seeing the trailers would have trashed the film.
I honestly don't know what to make of the storyline but filmmakers taking a giant risk is something worth noting. I have not seen a studio film like this and I'm amazed they took the gamble with this film and it's something they need to do a lot more.
This film was very divided by the marketing, you cannot trick the audience into watching a film that is designed for the indie crowd. A lower budget and a more festival focus might have seen this film succeed.
