Review of mother! (2017) by Gabrielle W — 08 Mar 2018
The wrong audiences went to see Mother! I think People got confused by paramount and Jlaw and expected another Hollywood mainstream moment. If you're even slightly aware of Darren Aronofsky's films this work should come as no surprise.
He has always been fascinated with the biblical and has often played on the stresses of the lead characters. It is definitely a thriller/horror and I'm confused by those who state otherwise. Was it not horrific? Did it not leave you stressed and anxious? Those who expected something else entirely, well.
...... whose fault is that? I mean, I went to see 'the impossible' on a bad hangover having no idea what it was, which made for very traumatic viewing but I blame my own ignorance, not the film.
Mother! is beautiful and devastating in equal measure. Human beings continue to destroy the home they've been given and each other and use their inane worships of 'gods' to justify it, but I get it, it's divisive.
The truth hurts as they say and this film hurts, but in a good way.
