Review of mother! (2017) by Rick L — 13 Mar 2018
"mother!" is an allegorically-heavy film & although some of the more obvious allegories it presents can be comprehended by the everyday viewer, a lot of them completely fall far from said viewers' understanding. Not everyone has read the Bible & the Old or New Testament & it should not be assumed that everyone watching this film is a Christian to begin with. These decisions heavily narrow down the film's audience who are able to understand the film's deeper meanings & metaphors.
The majority of the audience will have to be entertained only by what they watch on screen & that's where the film falls flat on it's head. The film's pacing is weird & most of the stuff happening in it seem ridiculous. One can argue that the film plays well with the self's sense of security in their own home, their own personal space but even that is quickly taken out of the logical proportions & just leaves the viewer not taking what's happening seriously while laughing at the scenes of the 2nd & 3rd act.
Bardem & Lawrence are not exceptional but are good enough for the film. Perhaps the saddest aspect, cast-wise, is the talents of Harris & Pfeiffer being wasted by being used only for the 1st act of the film.
