Review of mother! (2017) by David C — 26 Mar 2018
Aronofsky has marshalled his considerable directorial energies to create a masterwork of contempt for the reactionary ignorance and violence given birth to by the malicious demons of our spiritual natures.
A film that by its so very visceral narrative must awaken some, as yet unconscious sense in even the most ardent of believers, of the viciously destructive shill of religion; how it perverts (dare I say canibalizes) our native selflessness and potential for love.
Christian iconography is the most obvious in the film, but other mythologies are present to lend the critique a global reach: a Promethean Mary steals fire to undo His (not Her) violent creations and a crystaline shali from the cindered corpse of the bodhisattva mother, is extracted as the centerpiece perpetuating the cyclical retelling of this powerful, cautionary philippic.
Never has fire purified with such visionary artistic vehemence. Well done Mr. Aronofsky, another gem.
