Review of mother! (2017) by Richard S — 17 Apr 2018
Darren Aronofsky films often divide opinion and ten minutes into this I knew this would be a love it or hate it film. This one I obviously loved, along with Black Swan and Noah but on the other hand I struggled to get into Pi, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream or The Wrestler.
I can't with any certainty tell you what this film was about other than it feels like a living nightmare and watching a complete decent into madness. I've never seen anything like it and I was very impressed, the ending of the film was certainly very unnerving. The film begins with a couple living in a remote location, one a struggling poet looking for inspiration and the other renovating the house which had previously been destroyed by fire. When unwelcome visitors arrive with an ulterior motive , this sets off a series of events which leads to utter chaos, confusion and violence. Having thought about the film afterwards I can only guess it was some kind of Biblical allegory or some illusion to the destruction of mother nature. Whatever the meaning, it blew my tiny little mind.
