Mother! features great peformances and a lot of very unsettling sequences. The movie literally escalates to a point that you won't see coming. It's jaw-dropping at times.
However, it leaves you wondering what it was trying to say, what the message is behind all this. It's obviously some kind of metaphor for something. But no one really seems to be sure what it is. Does Darren Aronofsky know?
Films don't need to give all the answers. In fact, they often work better if they don't. However, when a film is as horrifying and violent as "Mother!", it would be nice to know that there was a point in all of it other than it's fantastic presentation and the shock it manages to induce.
