Review of mother! (2017) by Alexander N — 03 Oct 2017
While Aronofsky succeeds in making the audience feel uncomfortable, it's through bad writing and awful performances. Sure, it's provoking, and while it seems as if Aronofsky desperately wants to say something about love, religion and the strugle that comes with being an artist, all he succeeds in doing is making an allegory with nothing to say and no real story.
The writing is so abysmal, that not a single line of dialogue felt genuine, even when delivered by great actors such as Javier Bardem and Ed Harris. At every chance the movie tries to shock you, but for me it never works since I can't relate to anything that's going on.
With all that said, I would have been much more forgiving if the movie just looked great, but no. This movie looks terrible, with sloppy camera work, bad framing and truly disgusting CGI.
I know Darren Aronofsky is a great director, he's made quality work in the past, and so has almost the whole cast, but this is one to skip. I guess it takes a truly great director to make a truly bad film.
