Review of mother! (2017) by Tash M — 21 Sep 2017
Mother! is most definitely an arthouse-type film, and it was somewhat marketed that way. For this reason, I tried to go in with little expectation because I understand that, by nature, art films are unconventional. I really tried to judge the film for its production value... The film itself is just not great.
As a note, the cinematography was somewhat distracting for me with all of the close-ups of Lawrence, though this field and the house setting are beautiful. Unfortunately, as for the plot and overall story, this seems like an acid trip gone wrong because this explicit torture and chaos goes beyond the realm of 'poignant' and just becomes gross.
Regarding performances, I think that Michelle Pfeiffer is the best one here. Jennifer Lawrence is not a bad actress by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, I dare say that Lawrence was miscast in this film, but I don't think that would make up for the rest of this movie. If you want to see a movie with a deep meaning or you are a fan of indie and art films, I recommend that you watch something else.
