Review of mother! (2017) by Mpc60Champ — 01 Jan 2018
The problem with this movie is the trailer that Paramount puts out was selling it as a horror or thriller. The first 30 minutes built tension. After that you begin to get mad at the characters because you knew there was social commentary from 30 minutes to the second hour of the movie.
The biblical themes are there with a man who is "God?" You have Ed Harris carrying around a picture of god with nowhere to go, but yet he invites his wife and kids over to the house. God accepts the family for who they are.
The moment you see that you know someone is pushing their social commentary. What I thought was going to be horror/thriller was now an art house film with biblical theme. If the trailer even has a hint of biblical theme then I wouldn't of rented it.
This is one of the films that gets so bad that even if you have alcohol in your system you will sober up quickly. Paramount was selling this as a horror / thriller so they can minimize their losses. If viewers knew this was an art house movie from the beginning then there would be less negative reviews.
This movie could have been played by smaller names to save the studio some money. The acting from all the big names was very "canned ham". All the big names felt like they were themselves and not the biblical references who they were.
By the time you reach the last 45 minutes of the film you are given visuals of all of God's worshippers. The good Christians and the people who put his name in vain, "ooooh". If you think you're going in for horror you will end up with Aranofsky's feelings on Christianity.
Save your money horror fans there's a lot of other horror movies to watch and get a good buzz to.
