The whole movie is a poorly constructued allegory. Characters represent aspects of multiple judeo-christian religious figures that were seperated by thousands of years and winding lineages... it just literally makes no sense.
While the actors are not the ones here to blame, "mother!" comes off like an art school senior film project, where they tried to remount the bible in a more "accessible" way.
