Apparently I'm in the minority but I absolutely loved mother! It's religious and political and intellectual and allegorical. I think it would help a viewer to have some Christian/catholic knowledge to connect with some of the imagery and storyline. Of course as ambiguous as the movie is, maybe my own background is what led me to those interpretations. Nonetheless, it is disturbing and beautiful and disgusting and heartbreaking.
Don't go expecting to see a formulaic suspense or horror movie, it is definitely much more.
