Review of mother! (2017) by Jay P — 21 Sep 2017
This film should be studied for years. It's definitely not a feel good movie, but the Bible really isn't either. mother! will make you think for days after seeing it. The entire movie is a horrific metaphor. Some are saying it shouldn't be classified as a horror, but that only deepens the metaphor further.
It felt like a Charlie Kuafman nightmare where it starts off calm and then takes you for an insane crazy ride that will disturb you. And it should. Humans are disturbing.
The browbeating of feminism is the central moral to this story. Critics who attempt to say that the biblical metaphors and the forceful oppression of woman does not match up only plays into the allagory even further.
This is a movie that should be watched with a clean slate. Your gut reaction to the film will give insight to your own view of the world. The "aahaa" moment you get after leaving the movie and realizing what it is about is the cherry on top.
Darren Aronofsky has made another thought provoking, controversial, dark fairy tale that almost should be regarded as his best work. My love for this director has increased tenfold.
