Review of mother! (2017) by Aila M — 15 Sep 2017
No spoilers.
Because I'm familiar with the director's work (Requiem For A Dream, which, strangely, might be his most "normal" film, unless you count his take on Noah or Black Swan), I went in to "mother!" expecting something weird. I even thought that I knew what kind of film that it would ultimately "be", but went anyway, largely based on reviews and not wanting to be spoiled on whatever it had to offer. I was wrong. And I HATED this movie. I hated its take on the subject, or at least my interpretation of what the subject was. (I thought that it was pretty clear, by the end certainly, but the lady in front of me asked her friend what it was about as the credits rolled.) It made me agitated just sitting there watching it. (Not saying that it would have that affect on everyone, but my stress level has been pretty high for awhile lately and this damn movie found a way to poke at it while I was sitting in a darkened theater on a Saturday.).
You've been warned.
