I would say going in to the film knowing who/what the characters represent is a must. I watched it without knowing anything going in, and it was a pretty surreal and brutal experience. Looking back, now that I know what the characters represented (thanks google), I have to say it's a brilliant film.
I definitely want to see it again now that I understand it.
