Review of mother! (2017) by Lecheng Z — 15 Sep 2017
Watched this twice.
I was intentionally hammered the first time.
I wore my critic cap the second.
The problem with this movie, is no one is going to see themselves where they should. No religious person is going to watch this and leave thinking, "ah, I see the idiocy of my beliefs" and no evangelical bible beating oil drinking Christian is going to reconsider their priorities. The Poet will always be fetishized at the expense of what truly matters, Mother Earth.
It should probably bother or at least worry me that nothing in this movie disturbed or disgusted me. Instead, every beat during the fantastic closing act felt cathartic. Cathartic like a patient who has been sick for a long time without a diagnosis or prognosis and hears for the first time, "cancer and at most a year left". There is a terrible kind of peace found within the exposure of the deepest darkest secrets. A burning fever driving us all to witness uncomfortable truth.
