Review of mother! (2017) by Clifford R — 16 Sep 2017
Bold and daring. Very risky... problem here is the trailers up until the release of IT proclaimed the movie to be something it isnt... It isn't a horror film in a traditional sense but it was horrific imagery and themes.
I understand the counter defense is going to be "you just didn't get it"... Oh I got it and had you presented it that way in trailers it would have been better received. Set everyone up for ice cream and come to find out it's cottage cheese.
It's an Art House film, it is a Masterclass in filmmaking... but it's also an assault on the senses and not the traditional type of film you go out to a Mainstream theater to watch, it's not an escape from reality it's a heavy handed dose of reality.
.. and while I appreciate the effort - it wasn't what I signed up for based on the trailers. They went as far as to mimic the original posters of ROSEMARYS BABY... So it leaves a viewer torn between hating the deception or appreciating the artistic effort.
Would I want to watch emotional torture and physical abuse while hammering home the intended message of the film for 2 hours? Maybe... but we didn't get that choice.
