Review of mother! (2017) by Laura R — 16 Sep 2017
Completely disagree with Matthew Slaven. The Husband is neither God testing Mother (Nature) to the point of no return nor we are "only focused on the narcissistic man who drains his partners of all their love and spits them out for the next, younger model" (which he is going to ignore the same way he did before).
Vicious circle repeating itself again and again tells us the Husband is not human either. I even doubt his role was of a Satan. God is forgiving and good-he would not throw His children to be brutally murdered by the crowd.
Humanity destroys itself. Devil does not want human heart (mother's heart)-he wants our souls. I was watching first half of the film with interest, but was disillusioned (NOT shocked) by the ending-from the very beginning you see that The house has dark past and unexpected visitors make it very clear-they are here not for the first time-there is a conspiracy.
What shocked me was graphic violence which was not necessary to make a point. If you get away from allegory, it is not clear why the Husband had "empty" house with young loving wife under the same roof 24/7 and why he waited to be inspired to start writing by the baby news only to destroy the love that he had? Doesn't life change its course when lesson is being learned? Why ? Would be interesting to hear what this film is about from the director himself.
If brutalizing human body is displayed on a big screen to shock -it rather makes normal humans sick . Don't say it is work of art created for a "higher purpose and has hidden meaning"- it simply negatively affects masses and creates more violence in our already rotten society.
True artist can shock with his original ideas and the way to show them without going graphic. Shockers coming out: new movie called Downsizing ( how to solve overpopulation problem without killing humans).
Two stars for: bodily harm to a human being and for un-original ending.
