Review of Mother (2016) by Alex M — 08 Oct 2017
I can see why most regular moviegoers hated this movie, but I appreciated it. mother! is creative and daring and filled with rich symbolism and imagery. Lawrence is fantastic in the lead. Considering the choice of cinematography, with so many close-ups of Lawrence from nearly every angle, she has to really carry the emotional weight of the film on her shoulders - and she carries it.
Bardem and the rest of the cast are also excellent, although they don't get nearly as much screen time as Lawrence, who is nearly always on screen. Really, in the end, it's an electrifying film and a daring project - pretentious, yes, but thought-provoking and fucked-up and exciting.
I was left thoroughly shaken by the story told.
