Review of Mother (2016) by Alberico F — 21 Dec 2017
Pacing problems, especially in the first half, and lack of subtlety are my main issues with the movie. A lot more could have been achived only by:
- making the first act look and feel more "normal" and less obviously supernatural, so that the escalation would have had a stronger impact;.
- not showing/saying too much, especially CGI hearts and similar elements that are either too cryptic just for the sake of it, or too obvious to the point that it feels like the movie thinks we are too stupid to figure it out.
That being said, the performances are on point, the film looks gorgeously anachronistic and nothing ever takes you out of the "illusion" in that department, the climax shocks enough, not in the way it could have though, and it's clear that leaves you with some kind of message, it just needed a little bit more focus to ground that 1 message instead of playing around with 2 or 3.
Not perfect, and I wish it was 'cause it definitely shows the potential to be far better than it is, it's still a smartly written movie, that raises questions, shocks you, fiiled with great performances and that leaves you something to think about after the credits roll.
