Review of Mother (2016) by Tal G — 08 Apr 2018
A pretty bland and unsophisticated spectacle.
It was entertaining, I'll give this movie that. It was very stylish and slick. It's shot in interesting ways, the visuals were all crisp and moody, effective in what the movie was going for. The tension building was pretty great, it could really get under your skin well.
The acting was pretty straightforward and for that reason unremarkable. Since the characters in the movie aren't allowed to be much else than their intended biblical counterparts, there's nothing going for them in terms of humans I should actually care about or be interested in. The movie didn't even try to go for it. The only exception I can think of is probably mother nature herself.
The movie plays it all out way too straight in my opinion. It could've been much more nuanced and stimulating if some effort was put into fleshing out the metaphors more. Not just having two brother fight to the death after we've been barely introduced to them a minute ago, just to have the Cain and Abel gag.
This movie kinda rings hollow with it's extremely obvious metaphors. Just wasted potential. It could've been great, instead it's just a weird uncomfortable half assed allegory that's well made.
