Review of Mother (2016) by Roxanne K — 27 Oct 2017
Mother! is worth a watch, but hardly merits a second. The initial off-kilter mystery of it was captivating, and the cinematography for this portion was also lovely - although you can very much tell that the director is in infatuated with Lawrence.
As the film spirals, I felt the frustration they want you to feel - a rare redeeming quality of the second half of the film, which frankly falls into chaos. Without giving too much away, the allegory is tired and so painfully obvious that the carefully crafted opening scenes are put to waste.
What could have been an excellent reveal or a decently well done abstract concept is ruined by a filmmaker who clearly thinks he is smarter than you. For women especially, the heavy-handedness is an insult.
