Review of Mostly Martha (2001) by Krystal H — 07 Aug 2007
Perhaps the best food movie ever. This movie, as I discussed with my friends after seeing it, has what is missing in so many American films: subtlety. Martina Gedeck's understated compulsion for culinary perfection and order is unparalleled. This is not overdone at all, it is how people act when they are obsessive. But a small child throws a huge wrench into that. Add a very strange Italian into her inner sanctum (kitchen) and you have quite a movie.
It's a film that catches the range of human emotions and unfortunately it has been made into the movie I was afraid it would be here. The best scenes are butchered (for lack of a better term) and they lose their power. The sub-titles are worth it, trust me.
