Review of Morvern Callar (2002) by Jared L — 22 Sep 2008
The film opens up with lights flashing on and off. The source of the light is a Christmas tree. On the floor, Morvern is lying next to her boyfriend with his slit wrists bleeding. This is one of the many remarkable scenes which appear throughout.
Shortly thereafter, the audience is taken to a house party where pulsing music is set to slow motion scenes, a boatman flashes his light on a woman on the shore, the picture becomes blurry, the sound is turned off.
It's completely surreal. Morton provides an excellent rendering of the lead character. In one scene, she is able to show the barely contained excitement about to rush to the surface when Morvern finds that her dreams are about to come true.
The combination of ethereal cinematography, tripped-out music, challenging subject matter, and excellent performances make for a very good film.
