Review of Mortdecai (2015) by Brett H — 20 Apr 2015
A complete misfire from the opening lines that has Johnny Depp further embarrassing himself thinking that his "whacky", "off-beat" shtick still works. This film is a complete conundrum as it has no apparent audience being a send-up of Pink Pantheresque spy mysteries, yet the film is rated R and keeps trying to be crude for the sake of it.
The story is forgettable as-all-hell and the only character I found interesting/entertaining was Paul Bettany's, Jock, who was stone-serious and endlessly loyal in point-blank, hilarious manner. Johnny Depp needs to realize that just because he acts quirky and changes his appearance a tad, doesn't mean he's playing an actual character; more a shell of one who's never further developed than the ludicrous dialogue he spews.
I wouldn't say I "hated" this film because it has some chuckles and Paul Bettany really made me laugh, but it's completely disposable and I won't go anywhere near it again.
