Review of Mortdecai (2015) by Joe B — 11 May 2015
While the movie was not amongst Depp's finest it does have its moments. A lot of people complain that Hollywood is stuck (and it is!) making every comic book into a movie, making sequels for the sake of doing so or the hot new term "Rebooting". The filmmakers did something different. Mortdecai has a certain throwback charm to it. Depp hits all his marks, is charming and is accent is perfect. Yes, the movie is silly and does not take itself seriously but it supposed to be a fun caper like they use to make.
It's a shame that the Mortdecai was not received as well as it was because there are three books in writer Kyril Bonfiglioli's series and Johnny Depp I am sure as producer secured rights to them all thinking it would be a fun character to play in three movies. I would rather see a movie that takes chances rather than the paint-by-numbers basic movie or remake that is coming out each and every week.
