Review of Mortdecai (2015) by Stuart M — 12 May 2015
Johnny Depp manages (mostly) to bring a sense of dignity to his character that's often lacking in such comedies these days. His performance is the best thing in this film and Depp seems to be enjoying himself.
Unfortunately it's played so broad that it's basically impossible to break the suspension of disbelief required to believe that anyone would willingly follow/listen to this man. Particularly the very lowbrow Jock whose complete loyalty is very confusing.
Even given this problem the film could still have been enjoyable if it didn't squander its potential on one unfunny setpiece after another along with a sometimes confusing plot that seems to assume a certain level of understanding of the art world.
Or perhaps it simply doesn't make any sense. Either way, watching it is more of a chore than it should be despite some entertaining performances.
