Mortdecai is absolutely hilarious! Depp was clearly influenced by Terry Thomas's English upper class buffoon character in his onscreen persona. The film is packed with what must seem like endless inside jokes to those uninitiated or imperceptive to this brand of humor.
Therefore with this understanding it would seem highly likely that critics who shredded this film just did not get it. If you can't stand sitcoms, have watched more than Sesame Street on PBS or simply enjoy subtler humor more often found in British films, then this film may be for you.
