Review of Mortdecai (2015) by J J — 24 Jan 2015
If you are looking for a studied, wry, clever, critically acclaimed comedy that may very well win Oscars, go and see Birdman. The American critics thought it was amazing, whereas I found it rather slow and boring.
Mortdecai on the other hand was amusing, whimsical and played well to the British audience that was watching. I am not surprised the American critics don't like it, it is very much a British work of humour, as can be seen by the cameo of Paul Whitehouse (one of Depp's favourite comic actors).
Depp's performance was exactly how I thought it should be and the whole film was enjoyable and silly in equal measure from start to finish. I liked it and therefore it was a success for me. You can keep your Birdmans, Tennenbaums, Sidewayses and Lost in Translations.
They all failed to entertain me. This film didn't. Well Done Depp....Screw hollywood.
